Chiefs defender says schoolboy defensive errors are a thing of the past

Regular schoolboy mistakes in defence were one of the major reasons why Gavin Hunt was fired from Kaizer Chiefs.

The statistics are damning. Amakhosi conceded 37 goals in 30 league matches and 35 of those were conceded in the 28 games before Hunt was sacked.

After his departure, Chiefs conceded two goals in the last two matches under their interim coaches, Arthur Zwane and Dillon Sheppard.

Experienced defender Daniel Cardoso said Kaizer Chiefs and Hunt were not a good fit.

“He wanted players in and out. Sometimes you have got to work with what you’ve got,” said Cardoso.

Cardoso said Zwane and Sheppard have been wonderful with the players.

“Since Arthur and Dillon came into the fold, we are doing quite a bit on the training ground. They’ve got us working pretty hard and you can see the changes in the back five. It’s been amazing.”

On Wednesday, Amakhosi travelled to Morocco to take on Wydad Casablanca in the CAF Champions League semi-final first leg. The first time these two met was in the first match of the group stages and Chiefs were hammered 4-0. But in the second leg they managed to win 1-0 at home.

“This time things will be different. The good thing is that there will be a Video Assistant Referee so no bad officiating. All we need to do is to be strong at the back and come back with a goal or two.”

The match will be held at Stade Mohammed V at 9pm on Saturday.
