Kaizer Chiefs’ CAF Champions League fairytale continues as they advanced to the semi-finals despite suffering a 3-0 thumping from Tanzanian outfit Simba on Saturday.
Amakhosi survived the onslaught in Dar es Salaam and thanks to a 4-0 lead from last Saturday, they won the tie 4-3 on aggregate.
Chiefs will now play Wydad Casablanca in the semi-final. The two have met twice already in this campaign during the group stages.
The Moroccans thrashed Chiefs 4-0 away in the first match of Group C. In the return leg Chiefs won 1-0 in Soweto.
With the semis scheduled for June 18-19, Chiefs will travel to Morocco for the first leg. The return leg is set for June 25-26.
Their coach Gavin Hunt knew the home side would come out of their shell and throw everything at them.
“That’s what you expect over two legs. This time it was a bit different for us. They are the home team. But the bottom line is that we are in the semi-final. We dug in and we are through to the semis and that is the important thing,” said Hunt.
Meanwhile in Tshwane, Mamelodi Sundowns bowed out of the competition after they were held to a 1-1 stalemate by holders Al Ahly. Downs were hoping to overturn a 2-0 deficit from the first leg in Egypt but it wasn’t meant to be as they lost the tie 3-1 on aggregate.
Al Ahly will play Esperance of Tunisia in the semi-final.
After the match, ugly scenes were reported outside Loftus Stadium where Sundowns supporters had a go at their former coach Pitso Mosimane.
They were upset that his side Al Ahly beat Sundowns last Saturday.
Mosimane took aim at an unnamed Sundowns official accusing them of orchestrating a march where he said their supporters swore at his mother.
“I was a little bit emotional when I saw the placards outside the stadium. All of those people swearing at me and swearing at my mother. I asked myself what else I should have done for this team to gain their respect but it’s football and I understand.”
