South Africans can now access advanced AI tools for less after OpenAI launched its new ChatGPT Go plan across Africa.
The plan costs R149 per month, much cheaper than ChatGPT Plus at R399 and ChatGPT Pro at R3,999.99. Both Plus and Pro prices include South Africa’s 15% VAT.
ChatGPT Go was first tested in India before expanding to Indonesia and 18 other Asian countries. Africa is the latest region to get access.
The new plan gives users ten times more messages, image generations and uploads each day compared to the free version. It also doubles memory for more personalised responses.
However, ChatGPT Go does not include some of OpenAI’s top tools, such as Sora video generation, Codex coding support, or deep research functions.
OpenAI said the goal is to make AI “affordable and accessible to everyone.” The company noted that millions of Africans already use ChatGPT to learn new skills, grow small businesses and find creative solutions to everyday problems.
The launch follows the release of OpenAI’s new GPT-5 and Sora 2 models. GPT-5 can switch between a fast mode for simple tasks and a “thinking” mode for complex reasoning.
Sora 2, the latest video model, creates realistic clips with sound and dialogue, but it’s currently only available in North America.
With ChatGPT Go, OpenAI says it wants to make powerful technology easier to use and accessible in local currencies across Africa.
