South Africa’s Tatjana Schoenmaker has broken her second Olympic record with victory in her 200m breaststroke heat and remains the favourite for Olympic glory.
Schoenmaker missed out on the world record by just 0.05 with a time of 2:19.16 – a time that puts her a long way ahead of the rest of the field for the semi-finals scheduled for 4:54am on Thursday.
In another victory for South Africa, Kaylene Corbett won her 200m breaststroke heat to qualify for Thursday’s semi-finals as the fourth fastest.
The 24-year-old has now become the clear favourite to win the gold medal in the 200m breaststroke final. Schoenmaker claimed the silver medal in the 100m breaststroke event to win South Africa’s first medal of the games and with the performance of the two swimmers, South Africa’s medal count is likely to increase.
All eyes will be on the semi-finals as Schoenmaker and Corbett look to progress to the final for spots on the podium.
