Black Britons more vulnerable to Covid-19

A British government report says that in Britain, black people are four times more likely to die of Covid-19 than whites.

“When taking into account age in the analysis, Black males are 4.2 times more likely to die a Covid-19-related death and Black females are 4.3 times more likely than White ethnicity males and females,” the report said.

Poverty is one of the key reasons. “It is essential to tackle the social and economic factors … that lead to these unjust deaths,” author Dr Delan Devakumar told The Independent.

The British death toll has been one the world’s highest – on Thursday at 30,076. The government has been heavily criticised for leaving lockdown until too late.

This mirrors what has been happening in the United States (death toll 74,581), where black people are also more likely to die of Covid-19.
