- Ex-police minister Bheki Cele says he fears for his life without state security.
- Cele warns current ministers to prepare for losing perks quickly after office as he now faces his past enemies alone.
Former police minister Bheki Cele says he now fears for his safety after losing his security team.
He also says he now drives his own “skorokoro” (old car).
Speaking to Vuma FM in Durban, Cele shared his concerns about encountering Cape Town gangsters he helped arrest when he was a minister.
“There are top guys I took down who were still attending their cases when I was a police minister. I made a lot of enemies, and those people sometimes remind you about what you did to them while you were still a minister.
“It’s just that after all, you have to accept that you are a normal human being and anything can happen,” said Cele.
He added that the state quickly reclaims ministers’ perks when they leave office.
Cele lost his position after the ANC’s poor showing in the 29 May general elections led to a unity government.
He warned other ministers that their luxury cars and blue lights aren’t forever.
“Right now, I’m driving by myself in my own skorokoro car. It is no longer the same,” he said.
