Euro 2024 delivered its first major upset as Slovakia defeated Belgium 1-0 at the Frankfurt Arena on Monday.
It was the largest upset in the history of the European championships as the 48th ranked Slovaks put away the third ranked Red Devils.
Ivan Schranz’s strike inside just six minutes became Slovakia’s earliest ever goal at a major tournament, after a defensive blunder and a lack of vigour in front of goal by the Belgians.
Star striker Romelu Lukaku lacked luck on the night as he saw two goals disallowed and three big chances missed.
The earlier game saw Romania beat Ukraine 3-0 to go top of Group of E before France sealed a 1-0 win over Austria in the late kick off to join the Netherlands at the summit of Group D.
Max Wober put the ball into his own net to give Les Bleus a win in their opening game of the tournament as Didier Deschamps enjoyed his 100th victory while in charge.
France have now won six consecutive opening games at major tournaments, the longest current run of any European side.
On Tuesday, Turkey face Georgia before Portugal are in action against Czechia.
