Botswana’s Miss World Africa, Lesego Chombo, has swapped her crown for a cabinet post after being named her country’s new youth minister.
The lawyer-turned-beauty queen has shown that pageants can lead to real change. During her reign as Miss World Africa, she focused on the Miss World “Beauty With a Purpose” mission to help communities.
At her final Miss World Africa event where she handed over her crown, she spoke about how education changed her life. She thanked Botswana for giving her good schooling, recalling Nelson Mandela’s belief that education opens doors.
Chombo was hand-picked by the newly sworn-in President Duma Boko.
She does not belong to any party but the government feels she has represented Botswana well abroad. She is considered an asset to the country.
Her move into politics breaks old ideas about beauty queens and shows young women they can be leaders, too.
“Ours is a mission to build future leaders,” said Miss World South Africa Carol Bouwer about pageant winners like Lesego, who go on to serve their countries.
Bouwer said Chombo is a great representation of what young women could do.
