Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has slammed Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates for diluting the quality of the national team by failing to match Mamelodi Sundowns.
After Chiefs failed to contribute a single player while Pirates provided three men for the upcoming national team camp, Broos is not happy with the Soweto giants.
This comes as the Belgian picked, in his final 23-man squad, eight players from Mamelodi Sundowns for the back-to-back 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Liberia.
“When you have many players from the same team, that means you don’t find the same quality somewhere else and that is not good for South African football,” Broos told the media.
“It is not good that teams like Chiefs and Pirates, who are top teams in this country, don’t have more players from them. It is not good. Chiefs are struggling, a little bit better now but they are still not the Chiefs of before.
“The same as Pirates, they get good results and a week later they are not good, so they are also not stable.”
The former Cameroon coach is concerned by the gap Sundowns have opened ahead of the Soweto giants in the Premier Soccer League title race.
“This is not good and let’s hope that Chiefs and Pirates are as soon as possible back as top teams and they fight with Sundowns for the championship and that will increase the quality of football,” said Broos.
“I don’t know [if Pirates and Chiefs don’t have a plan] but do you think it is normal that before they were nearly champions but they are now 20 points behind Sundowns? There is something wrong,” said Broos.
‘I don’t know what it is but Sundowns are so strong because they have a plan. But I didn’t say Chiefs and Pirates don’t have a plan.”
Bafana go into camp on Sunday and take on Liberia on 24 March at Orlando Stadium, before travelling to Monrovia for the return fixture four days later.
