Bafana Bafana secured a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a resounding 3-0 victory over Rwanda in their final qualification match on Tuesday.
The win, played at the Mbombela Stadium, saw South Africa claim top spot in Group C, cementing their qualification for the tournament in Canada, Mexico, and the USA.
The match began brightly for the hosts, with Oswin Appollis causing chaos in the Rwandan defence.
Thalente Mbatha capitalised on Appollis’ brilliance, scoring the opening goal with a powerful shot from outside the box just five minutes in.
Appollis would go on to make another significant contribution, netting the second goal four minutes before the half hour mark after a well-executed team move.
After the break, Bafana continued to dominate; and Evidence Makgopa sealed the win with a header from Appollis’ corner in the 72nd minute.
The 3-0 victory marked a convincing performance by Bafana Bafana, who will now focus on friendly matches as they prepare for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Bafana’s win would not have been enough for qualification if Benin had got a win over Nigeria in the group’s other game. But the Super Eagles helped South Africa by picking up a 4-0 victory in Uyo.
