Arrested for frosting their cake with kwachas

Two young businesswomen who bake for a living were arrested after decorating their cakes with the Malawian currency.

Police in Blantyre are keeping in custody the two bakers, identified as Tumpale Ghambi, 24, and Sibongire Kaira, 25, on the allegation that they decorated a cake using bank notes.

Blantyre Police assistant public relations officer Constable Ivy Mwalabu said the duo, who are in the baking business in Kanjedza, decorated their cake using K500 kwacha notes, the total of which amounted to K35,000, on Saturday January 7.

The creative bakers then posted the cake on their business Facebook page as a way of advertising their products.

“Reserve bank of Malawi officials reported the matter to Blantyre Police Station after noticing the advert on social media, and police launched a manhunt for the two,” said Mwalabu.

Constable Mwalabu added that the suspects have since been charged with damaging the Malawian currency and that they will appear before the court when investigations are completed.

Both suspects are from the northern region of the country. “Ghambi comes from Mwenilondo Village in the area of Traditional Authority Kyungu in Karonga District, while Kaira is from Wenya Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mwenewenye in Chitipa District,” she said.
