The ANC’s fight with King Misuzulu KaZwelithini’s traditional prime minister has worsened after they decided to strip Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi of his power to run water projects in KwaZulu-Natal.
Minister of Water and Sanitation Senzo Mchunu announced this on Sunday during a high-powered ANC visit to the KwaMandlakazi Royal House in Nongoma.
Mchunu said he had removed the provision of water services from the Zululand district, where Buthelezi is the IFP mayor, “after the failure of the district to manage its water project”.
“We took the decision [to move the responsibility for the provision of water] to make sure that the people of Zululand received water without any difficulties. As the ANC we want the people of this district to get water services without any problem,” said Mchunu.
The ANC leadership is said to be intent on rebuilding its relationships with the Zulu Royal Family after its fallout with Buthelezi.
Mchunu led the visit and was accompanied by ANC KZN secretary Bheki Mtolo and other executive members of the party in the province.
He urged traditional leaders to push for peace in their areas during the run-up to the 29 May elections.
“Traditional leaders need to champion peace in order to make sure that people choose the political party of their choice. People also need to know that the ANC is not a stranger to the Royal Family.
“King Dinuzulu kaCetshwayo was an honorary president of the ANC. He also blessed the organisation with 10 cattle during its formation,” said Mchunu.
