The ANC in the eThekwini region is allegedly in a financial crisis. It is believed to be unable to pay the salaries of its staff members and also owes over R400,000 in rent arrears for its offices in the Commercial City building in Durban.Ā

These claims were made to Scrolla.Africa by frustrated staff who didn’t want to be named to avoid being targeted.

Desperate and frustrated staff have asked ActionSA KwaZulu-Natal leader Zwakele Mncwango to force ANC regional secretary Musa Nciki to take their issue seriously.

Staff members went to ActionSA because that party had managed to stop the provincial government from spending R28-million to host the Sama Awards last year by bringing the issue to the attention of the president.

Mncwango has given Nciki seven days to respond to allegations raised by the staff members.

“We last got our full salaries in September,” said a staff member.

“After that, the situation took a shocking turn when the office failed to pay us. We raised our complaints but we were given food parcels and vouchers instead of our salaries.ā€

Another staff member said: ā€œAs time went by those who were vocal about the salary crisis were victimised. We then experienced a new tendency of being paid in cash in envelopes like construction workers.”

The sources claimed that they were paid only half of their salaries in December and it was in cash.Ā

Another source revealed that the organisation in the region owes estimated office rent arrears of R400,000.

He said some staff members have resigned in frustration.

“The current regional leadership is on the brink of collapse because it is destroying its administration staff. Sometimes we wonder how they are going to keep the big promises they are making to the people while they are failing us in the office,” he said.Ā

ANC regional spokesperson Mlondolozi Mkhize told Scrolla.Africa the region had some financial challenges because of the lack of donations.

“It is not true that our staff members had to supplement their salaries with food parcels. It might have happened in December for Christmas. We once had financial problems because the organisation survives on donations but our staff are fully paid every month,” said Mkhize.

On the issue of the rental debt, he said they have an agreement with the landlord which they abide by.
