An African National Congress ward in Vryheid in northern KwaZulu-Natal has declared its support for Police Minister Senzo Mchunu.

Mchunu is on special leave after President Cyril Ramaphosa suspended him following corruption allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

Lindokuhle Xulu, the branch treasurer, told Scrolla.Africa that they stand by Mchunu because he has respected due process, including the establishment of a commission of enquiry into the claims.

“Mchunu has shown discipline as a seasoned comrade. He even voluntarily went on special leave without any ignorance. We really respect him for such ethical behavior as a leader. We also support him for always being loyal to the ANC values which bind us as comrades to always be disciplined,” said Xulu.

During a visit to the area, the branch presented Mchunu with a sheep as a gift.

The commission will be led by deputy chief justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga.

The allegations surfaced while Mchunu was campaigning for the African National Congress in ward 23 in Vryheid.

Reports claim that senior party leaders tried to collude with uMkhonto weSizwe Party leader Jacob Zuma in a secret meeting in Durban to sabotage the commission through the Constitutional Court.

It is alleged that police minister Bheki Cele and Dr Zweli Mkhize encouraged the uMkhonto weSizwe Party to challenge the process in court. Both are said to want Ramaphosa to remove Mchunu.

Cele reportedly fears the commission could expose corruption from when he held the same post.

Mkhize has strongly denied ever meeting Zuma or Cele. Cele could not be reached for comment.
