A young Eastern Cape teacher who is facing two counts of rape is now jobless and facing a possible 15-year jail term.

The 26-year-old teacher resigned just as the district director of education was preparing a formal disciplinary hearing against him.

District director of Alfred Nzo West, Monwabisi Mbangeni, told Scrolla.Africa any teacher who faces such serious charges is often dismissed and blocked from ever teaching again.

Last week two matric girls from Ntsizwa Senior Secondary School in EmaXesibeni opened a rape case against the teacher and he was arrested.

One of the girls fell pregnant and recently opted for an abortion because she wants to go to university next year.

The teacher is out on R5,000 bail. One of the bail conditions is that he may not visit the school but must relocate from the district of Mount Ayliff to Matatiele, about 150 kilometres away.

The case was postponed to 27 January 2023 for trial.
