A man suspected of shooting and killing a mourner at an “after tears” gathering at a funeral has died in hospital from injuries sustained in a revenge attack.
The shooting occurred on 21 January at the funeral of Spamandla Henry Mazibuko, 43, who had died from natural causes.
After the burial in Tembisa’s Phomolong section, mourners gathered to celebrate Spamandla’s life. According to witnesses, an argument between two men ensued. It escalated and one pulled a gun and shot the other one dead.
Other mourners chased down the suspected killer, assaulted him, doused him with petrol and set him alight.
The police, who had been called after the shooting, arrived at the scene and rescued the injured suspect.
Rabie Ridge police station’s spokesperson Nhlongo confirmed to Scrolla.Africa that the man later died of his injuries.
Spamandla’s sister, Sthabile Manyathi, who was at the after tears gathering, said the shooter was not a family member.
“He only came to the funeral because he used to rent a room on our property. May his soul rest in peace,” she said.
