Extra-Time: A club’s management can orchestrate their team’s failure without realising it, writes Menzi Magubane.
In the heat of the moment, after Chippa United secured a dramatic 2-1 win over Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday, something extraordinary happened.
Chiefs Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Junior refused to shake the hand of the coach of his own club, Arthur Zwane.
He was disappointed – his team lost and missed out on a chance to top the DStv Premiership log table – but who wasn’t?
Motaung Jr should know better than to act the way he did.
He was the one who begged the club supporters to be patient with Zwane at the beginning of the season, as he is still rebuilding the club.
But at Moses Mabhida Stadium after the match, he failed to practice what he preached.
He should know that Rome wasn’t built in a day and he should have shown support for Zwane and his technical team when they needed him the most.
His behaviour has left people wondering what is happening behind the scenes at the club.
Those who understand football should sympathise with Zwane’s current position.
They can see the difference between the team that was demolished by Mamelodi Sundowns at the beginning and the team now – one that climbed from 14th place to fifth after winning three consecutive matches.
Motaung Jr should be in full support of Zwane, regardless of the result at the weekend.
Not shaking hands with him in full view of the supporters and TV cameras, Motaung Jr should be ashamed of himself.
True leaders would have swallowed their pride and hide their disappointment and give full support to the technical team.
