The security guard who fired live ammunition at a high school in Tembisa has been arrested.

Learners who experienced the shooting have been offered counselling by the Gauteng Department of Education.

The department’s spokesperson, Steve Mabona, confirmed the arrest to Scrolla.Africa.

The security guard was caught on video firing a warning shot into the ground when learners he accused of selling achar in the classroom refused to stop.

Mabona said the department is aware of and deeply concerned by the “appalling behaviour of security personnel” at the Tembisa School of Specialisation,.

He said the matter was reported to the police. “The perpetrator has since been apprehended and is still in police custody.

“Our psycho-social support team was dispatched to the school to provide necessary support to all affected by this unfortunate incident.

“Our institutions should be safe environments conducive for effective learning and teaching,” he said.

Mabona however noted that the selling of goods within school premises is not allowed.

“The department equally condemns the unauthorised selling of goods by learners in school. The school will enforce its code of conduct to institute disciplinary processes against implicated learners,” he said.

Scrolla.Africa broke the story of the incident at the school.

Chaos erupted when the school security guard tried to stop learners from selling achar.

The defiant learners refused to follow his instructions. That’s when the guard was seen reaching for the firearm in its holster. The entire incident was captured on video.
