Cameroon-born Cindy Ngamba has faced many challenges since relocating to the UK at the age of 10, but she is now set to compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics as part of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) refugee team.
Ngamba experienced problems regarding her legal status in the UK and was nearly deported at the age of 20.
But she has found success in boxing.
Ngamba’s dreams of representing Team GB were dashed due to her non-citizen status, despite her impressive record in amateur boxing.
However, her strength has led her on a different path as she has qualified for the Olympics through the IOC refugee team.
She became the first boxer on the refugee team to qualify for the Games, securing her spot through a qualifier in Italy.
“The way I see it is that all those setbacks – coming to the UK, my childhood, the documents situation and my boxing – it just made me stronger mentally and physically,” Ngamba told BBC Sport.
“I believe I can achieve anything that I put my mind to because I’ve gone through the worst.”
