Abongile Mgununde was chilling with his friends on Saturday in the township of Khayelitsha in Cape Town when they asked him to serve them shots of brandy.
He didn’t mind doing that for his friends. But when a stranger asked him for a shot as well, Abongile refused – and it cost him his life.
Shortly before the bottle of brandy emerged, the group of friends had been joined by a mysterious stranger.
Abongile didn’t mind his presence, but when he asked for a shot of the alcohol, this was a step too far, and Abongile refused to pour him one.
The man grew visibly infuriated by this slight and stormed off from the group.
On Sunday, Abongile went to chill with his friends again, and the same man came to them and asked why he was refused the brandy the day earlier.
Before Abongile could even respond the man allegedly slapped him.
Abongile’s brother Andile Mgununde said his brother didn’t fight back.
“He hated fights and he walked away. On his way home, the suspect followed him and continued assaulting him,” the brother said.
“We don’t know if the suspect got angry that my brother wasn’t fighting back.”
Failing to get a rise out of Abongile, the man took out his knife and stabbed him to death.
The Harare police spokesperson Captain Siyabulela Vukubi confirmed that a 23-year-old victim was stabbed to death on Sunday.
“This incident allegedly occurred after the suspect had an argument with the victim and later was stabbed and passed away in hospital. Harare SAPS are investigating a murder case and the suspect is yet to be arrested,” Vukubi said.
