  • Five-year-old Maskandi and TikTok star Nkunzivava died with three uncles in a car crash allegedly caused by drunk driving.
  • The overloaded car had seven people and open alcohol bottles when it crashed and burned near Drakensberg on Sunday.

Drunk driving is allegedly the main cause of the car accident that took the life of 5-year-old Maskandi and TikTok star Nkunzivava and his three uncles.

The information came out after emergency services attended the scene on Sunday morning along the P288 in Bergville near Drakensberg.

Sources told Scrolla.Africa that Nkunzivava, who was popular on TikTok, was travelling from a private event where he had performed with his uncles and was heading back home.

“It seems like they were coming from that event that had eight slaughtered cattle. In their maroon Nissan Magnite five-seater, they were overloaded. It had seven occupants, including Nkunzivava, who was declared a five-year-old child who died on the scene.

โ€œThe vehicle was also full of alcohol, with open bottles of Savannah and Castle Light. Three occupants of that Nissan Magnite were rushed to a nearby hospital, four others, including a five-year-old, died on the scene,” a source said.

A source also revealed that a fifth person who died was the driver of a VW Polo Vivo that was burnt beyond recognition.

Nkunzivava died with his fellow Maskandi performers, who were also his uncles. They were Sthalala, Mcondo and Mngomezulu.

His single with four songs has not been officially released yet. Among his single songs are Indoda Ayikhali, Ngiyijongo Mina, Sixteen, uMnotho waseMelika and Ngithengeleni iSbhamu.

KZN MEC for Transport and Human Settlement Siboniso Duma has said his team will help locate the families.

“Importantly, our focus is to ease the burden on their shoulders. We work with them to coordinate the funeral. We know that each family has a special need, and we will work with them throughout the week,” said Duma.

Funeral arrangements are being made with help from the provincial government.
