A traditional leader in Zimbabwe has made history by bringing together the descendants of past enemies King Shaka and King Zwide kaLanga. Chief Bhekithemba Ncube Dakamela brought the groups together over the Easter weekend to celebrate their history in unity.
He hosted the fourth annual Dakamela Awards at Nkayi Village in the north of Zimbabwe. Chief Dakamela uses the event to promote Ndebele culture, ubuntu and talent.
The event honoured African kingdoms whose ancestors originally came from KwaZulu-Natal. Many moved to other African countries during the Mfecane wars driven by King Shaka.
Chief Dakamela is a descendant of one of King Mzilikazi kaMashobane’s generals. His ancestor moved to Zimbabwe after refusing to give King Shaka cattle that his group had taken.
King Zwide of the Ndwandwe also moved away from King Shaka. His army lost a major battle at the Mhlatuze River around 1818 to 1819. After his home was destroyed, King Zwide moved north and lived in exile until his death around 1825.
King Misuzulu kaZwelithini’s spokesperson, Prince Thulani Zulu of the eZibindini Royal House, won a Dakamela Award. He won the prize for his work in promoting and protecting the Zulu monarch and culture.
Prince Thulani said the reunion was a historical moment.
“This time our reunion was not about spears and killings but it was a harmony to celebrate our heritage and unity as African royals,” he said.
He praised the chief for bringing the families together.
“We really appreciate the work Chief Dakamela is doing as he resuscitates the spirits of our forefathers in a celebration and a peaceful manner,” he said.
Many different groups attended the awards ceremony in Zimbabwe. The event included Zulu, Ndebele, and Basotho people, as well as Ngoni people from Tanzania, Malawi and Zambia.
