South Africa’s largest church, the Zion Christian Church (ZCC), will remain closed when lockdown rules drop to level 3.
Church head Bishop Lekganyane said on Thursday that it was not yet safe to open – even though level 3 rules allow religious gatherings.
Bishop Lekganyane said all ZCC churches will remain closed “until further notice”.
Wits Professor Francois Venter told ENCA on Thursday the reopening of churches is a reckless decision.
“I’m very scared for the congregants because churches have been a major place of infection.
“Whoever is responsible at churches … needs to be thinking very hard about how to socially distance.”
