Ukraine – Ukraine’s Security Service said they stopped a plan to overthrow the government, which would have helped Russia’s war against the country. The plan was to start a riot in Kyiv on June 30 to take over parliament and remove the country’s leaders. Four people are involved; two are in jail, and could get up to 10 years in prison. Weapons, ammunition, and digital evidence were found. The plan leader had rented a big hall and recruited military and armed guards. This news comes as Russia continues to advance, and Ukraine asks for more military aid from the West.

US – Donald Trump’s lawyers have asked to overturn his conviction and delay his sentencing in the porn star hush money case. This follows a Supreme Court ruling giving Trump immunity for actions taken while in office. Trump was convicted in May on 34 counts of falsifying business records, with sentencing set for July 11. His lawyers say the documents were signed during his presidency and should be considered official acts. A previous judge ruled that Trump’s actions were unrelated to his duties as president. The Supreme Court decision, which Trump celebrated, is about a different case involving his attempt to overturn the 2020 election.

Colombia – Diego Cardeñosa, a Colombian marine biologist who has loved sharks since he was a child, is very worried about their conservation. About 35% of shark species are at risk of extinction, primarily due to overfishing. Around 100 million sharks are killed each year, often caught by accident or deliberately for shark fin soup. Sharks’ slow reproduction rates make their decline worse, threatening ocean ecosystems.

Nepal – A Nepali court sentenced Ram Bahadur Bamjon, known as the “Buddha Boy,” to 10 years in prison for child sexual abuse. Bamjon gained fame in 2005 for meditating under a tree for nearly 10 months. He was also ordered to pay $3,750 (R69,187) to the victim. Now 33, Bamjon was arrested in January near Kathmandu. His lawyer plans to appeal the verdict. Despite unverified claims of surviving without food, water, or sleep during his meditation, Bamjon was once seen by some as the reincarnation of the Buddha.
