USA – TikTok will close in America on Sunday, 19 January, unless its Chinese owner ByteDance sells the app. A new law means Americans won’t be able to download TikTok anymore, and American companies can’t help run it. President-elect Donald Trump might delay the ban for up to 90 days. Current President Joe Biden won’t stop the shutdown unless the Supreme Court steps in or ByteDance sells TikTok to an American company.
Nigeria – The army says it has killed 76 Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters in Borno state between 7 and 13 January and also arrested 72 suspects and saved eight hostages. Soldiers fought the militants in areas including Damboa, Bama, and Chibok. The army also took guns and bombs from the fighters. The militants have been attacking more in Borno lately, including killing 40 farmers in Dumba.
Tanzania – Health Minister Jenista Mhagama says there is no Marburg disease outbreak in northwest Tanzania. Tests on suspected cases in Kagera came back negative. Last week, the World Health Organization worried about nine possible cases, with eight people dying. People had stopped shaking hands and followed health rules after hearing about it. Marburg is like Ebola and kills up to 88% of people who get it. It spreads through body fluids and touching infected surfaces. There’s no vaccine or cure.
