World news bites: Sudan battles death toll as health system fails

Rorisang Modiba delivers daily updates from around the world.

Sudan – Sudan is battling a severe cholera outbreak that has killed 430 people and infected 14,000 in the past month. Heavy rains and flooding have triggered the crisis, affecting several provinces, including Kassala, Gedaref, Khartoum, Al-Jazirah, and River Nile. The outbreak exacerbates the difficulties faced by the Sudanese, who have already been suffering from over a year of war. With 9 million people displaced and famine-like conditions, the collapsed health system is struggling to provide basic sanitation and healthcare.

New York – Sean “Diddy” Combs’ lawyer, Marc Agnifilo, addressed claims regarding 1,000 bottles of lubricant and baby oil found during raids on Combs’ homes. Agnifilo denied the reported number of bottles, suggesting that Combs may have purchased them in bulk. Authorities linked the items to alleged “freak-off” parties involving drugs and alcohol. Victims have claimed they were drugged, raped, and recorded without consent. Seized firearms with filed-off serial numbers were also reported.

India – India has confirmed its first case of the deadlier clade Ib mpox strain in a 38-year-old man from Kerala who had recently visited Dubai. The patient is recovering in isolation and undergoing regular testing. This strain, previously limited to Congo, was declared a global health emergency by the WHO after spreading to other countries. Mpox spreads through close contact, causing symptoms such as fever and rash.

US – During Cardi B’s Instagram Live, Offset accused her of cheating while pregnant. Cardi seemingly confirmed the accusation on X, saying, “AND DID !!!!!!” She expressed frustration over Offset’s behaviour, claiming he had threatened to take back gifts because she was moving on. Cardi criticised him for believing he could “buy” her and for being upset when she started seeing other people after his infidelity.
