South Korea – A South Korean court has approved an arrest warrant for President Yoon Suk Yeol, marking the first time a sitting president has faced such a warrant. Yoon has been stripped of his powers after parliament voted to impeach him. The warrant follows Yoon’s refusal to cooperate with investigators.accused of abuse of authority and orchestrating a rebellion. He faces multiple investigations, including charges related to attempting to shut down parliament and leading an insurrection, which carry severe penalties.
South Sudan – South Sudan has received 1.1 million doses of cholera vaccines as the country faces a growing cholera outbreak. The vaccines have been donated by Gavi.The outbreak has spread to six states, mainly affecting displaced people and refugees. Over 100 deaths and more than 6,000 infections have been reported. Health officials are urging intensified efforts to contain the disease and raise vaccination awareness.
New Orleans – The death toll in the New Orleans attack on New Year’s Eve has risen to at least 15 people. The suspect, identified as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar from Texas, drove through a crowd on Bourbon Street. The FBI confirmed the presence of an ISIS flag in his truck, along with weapons and a potential IED. Investigations are ongoing to determine his connections to terrorist organisations.
Kenya – President William Ruto acknowledged the abuse of power by Kenya’s security forces in his New Year’s address, admitting to instances of excessive actions amidst ongoing kidnappings and protests. Human rights groups are alarmed by the government’s failure to investigate disappearances, with many victims being young critics of Ruto. Despite a court ruling demanding the release of abducted individuals, no progress has been made.
