World news bites: Rwanda starts vaccine trial for deadly virus

Rwanda – The country has begun testing a vaccine against the Marburg virus, which was declared an outbreak on 27 September. The US-based Sabin Vaccine Institute is working with Rwanda to vaccinate about 700 high-risk people, including health workers and those who have been in close contact with infected individuals. There is no cure for Marburg, which spreads through contact with body fluids. So far, 12 people have died. Workers, including taxi drivers, are concerned about the risk of infection.

US – Taylor Swift, with a net worth of $1.6 billion according to Forbes, is now wealthier than Rihanna. Swift earned $600 million from her music and tours, and her songs are valued at another $600 million. She also owns $125 million worth of homes across the United States. Rihanna’s net worth stands at $1.4 billion, primarily due to her makeup and clothing brands. Swift became a billionaire in October 2023, following the success of her Eras Tour, which grossed over $1 billion worldwide.

US – Hurricane Milton, expected to hit Florida on Wednesday, has prompted the state’s largest evacuation since 2017. It is currently a Category 4 storm with winds reaching about 250 km/h. The storm is predicted to impact Tampa Bay and Orlando, possibly causing water levels to rise by up to 4 metres – the highest ever recorded in the area. Tampa Mayor Jane Castor has urged residents to evacuate, warning of “life-threatening conditions.” This hurricane follows closely after Hurricane Helene, which claimed over 200 lives in the southeastern United States.

US – Kanye West and Bianca Censori may be headed for a split after less than two years of marriage. According to TMZ, they broke up a few weeks ago. West, 47, has reportedly told friends he wants a divorce and plans to move to Tokyo. Censori, 29, has returned to Australia to be with her family. Their spokesperson, Milo Yiannopoulos, declined to comment. West has been spotted alone recently, including attending a wrestling match and dining at a Jamaican restaurant in Tokyo.

China – Two Chinese nationals were killed and one injured in a suicide attack near Karachi’s airport on Sunday. The Baloch Liberation Army claimed responsibility for the attack, which targeted Chinese engineers and investors working for an electrical company. At least seven others were injured, and significant damage was reported. Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, vowed to protect Chinese nationals and their investments in Pakistan. The attack occurred as tensions between China and Pakistan have been escalating.
