Rorisang Modiba brings you daily global updates.

China – Justin Sun, the founder of the cryptocurrency platform TRON, made headlines by eating a banana that is part of a famous artwork. The artwork, called Comedian, is a banana duct-taped to a wall and was created by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan. Sun bought it for R117 million at an auction and ate the banana at a press event in Hong Kong. He said it tasted “really quite good.” The artwork comes with a certificate allowing owners to replace the banana, which is why it retains its value despite being eaten many times since it first appeared in 2019.

Angola – Outgoing US President Joe Biden has set foot for the first time in Angola, and thousands of people lined the streets to welcome him. He is meeting Angola’s President João Lourenço, visiting the National Slavery Museum, and checking out a rail project in Lobito. Before arriving in the oil-producing southern African country, Biden stopped in another former Portuguese colony, Cape Verde, to meet the Prime Minister. The visit, delayed several times, comes just before Biden leaves office, with critics saying Africa has not been a priority for the US.

Ukraine – People living in a 16-storey apartment block in Kyiv have put up solar panels to fight power cuts caused by Russian attacks on energy supplies. The plan, led by Valerii Pyndyk from the building’s housing group, will provide energy for about 1,000 families during Ukraine’s tough winter. Long blackouts of up to eight hours are now common since the war broke out in February 2022. Many people and businesses are turning to solar panels, generators, and batteries to stay powered. Energy company Yasno said demand for solar power has grown fast, with plans to expand capacity from 8 to 30–35 megawatts next year.

UK – Queen Camilla, 77, is cutting back on her duties during Qatar’s state visit to the UK as she recovers from a chest infection. She will skip the arrival ceremony on 3 December but will join other events, like a lunch, a viewing of special items, and a state banquet at Buckingham Palace. Camilla will miss some parts of the banquet but plans to attend the farewell dinner on the last day. She is also set to appear at an event in France on 4 December with France’s First Lady, Brigitte Macron.
