World news bites: Putin cosies up to Africa

Rorisang Modiba brings you daily global updates.

Russia – Russian President Vladimir Putin, through his Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, has promised to help African countries fight terrorism and extremism. At a summit in Sochi, leaders from countries like Burkina Faso and Mali said they see Russia as a more supportive partner than their former Western allies, especially France. Russian mercenaries called the “Africa Corps” are helping military governments in these countries, though with mixed results. Russia’s growing partnerships in Africa are making it harder for the West to isolate Moscow.

Carolina – Several monkeys escaped from the Alpha Genesis research centre in Yemassee, South Carolina, leading authorities to use thermal cameras and traps to try to catch them. Locals were warned to keep doors and windows closed, stay away from the monkeys, and call 911 if they spotted any. The facility keeps macaque and capuchin monkeys in quarantine and breeding areas but didn’t say which type escaped. This isn’t the first escape from this facility; in 2016, 19 monkeys got out but were caught within hours.

China – A new night-time biking trend in China, which started with four students biking 50km from Zhengzhou to Kaifeng for dumplings, brought 100,000 cyclists into Kaifeng on Friday, filling hotels and public spaces. The trend, which became popular on social media with the hashtag “youth is priceless, night ride to Kaifeng has it,” began in June and quickly grew. The huge number of cyclists overwhelmed the small city, and police had to ask them to leave. Kaifeng has now introduced weekend restrictions on bike routes to reduce the crowds.

Los Angeles – Tony Todd, famous for his role in Candyman, has died at 69 from natural causes at his Los Angeles home. Todd was known for his powerful roles in films like Final Destination, Transformers, The Crow, Night of the Living Dead, The Rock, and his role as Commander Kurn in Star Trek. He also starred on Broadway in Aida. His 1992 role in Candyman made him a horror icon, and he returned to the role in two sequels and a 2021 reboot. Co-star Virginia Madsen called him an “angel” and a “great actor.”
