Sudan – At least 127 people, mostly ordinary citizens, died in bombings in Sudan on Monday and Tuesday. The fighting, which has lasted 20 months, is between the army and a group called the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The army carried out airstrikes in RSF-controlled areas, while the RSF attacked villages with bombs and guns. In North Darfur, over 100 people were killed in a market bombing in Kabkabiya. Witnesses said the army used barrel bombs, but the army denies this, saying it only targets the RSF.
United Nations – The UN’s António Guterres visited South Africa and asked for fair treatment for Africa in the fight against climate change. He said Africa has great potential but suffers the most from climate change even though it causes very little pollution. Guterres also said the world must work harder to keep temperatures from rising more than 1.5°C.
United States – Selena Gomez is engaged to music producer Benny Blanco. She shared pictures of her diamond ring on Instagram, saying: “Forever begins now.” The two have been dating for over a year, and people started guessing they were engaged after she posted a picture in August with hearts covering her left hand. Blanco called her his wife in a comment on her post.
Mongolia – Horses could be the new carriers of the deadly bird flu. This was after antibodies of the virus were found in horses in Mongolia. Scientists say this could be dangerous because horses could spread the virus to people. The University of Glasgow found that horses can carry the H5N1 virus without showing signs of being sick. This has raised fears that the virus could mix and create new strains that might infect humans.
