Congo – A deadly sickness has spread in the Panzi area of Kwango Province in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), affecting 406 people, mostly children under five and those suffering from hunger. Since October, 31 people have died. The illness causes fever, headaches, coughing, runny noses and body pain. Heavy rains and the remoteness of villages make it hard for doctors to help. The World Health Organization (WHO) is investigating the cause, which could be malaria, pneumonia, flu, Covid-19, measles, or a combination of these illnesses. The tropical DRC is prone to deadly diseases like Ebola and M-pox.
Thailand – Thailand is sending back nearly 1,000 rare animals, including tortoises and lemurs, to Madagascar. These animals were rescued from smugglers in May, though some died from a lack of food and water.
Europe – Europe is getting hotter, with 2024 potentially being the hottest year ever. Scientists report that November was 1.62°C warmer than in the 1800s, worsening wildfires, heatwaves and storms. Experts warn that urgent action is needed to prevent further warming.
Ghana – Former president John Dramani Mahama has won the election with 56.55% of the vote. His rival, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, accepted defeat to maintain peace. Mahama, 66, has pledged to fix the economy, secure a $3-billion deal with the IMF and invest $10 billion in roads and infrastructure. He previously served as Ghana’s leader from 2012 to 2016.
