World news bites: Island offers R20 homes to Trump-tired Americans

Rorisang Modiba brings you daily global updates.

Italy – In Sardinia, the small village of Ollolai is selling old, empty houses for just €1 (about R19.10) to attract new residents and save its community. The mayor says thousands of people are interested, with Americans—many unhappy about Donald Trump’s re-election—showing the most interest. Buyers can either fix up the cheap houses or buy ready-to-live-in homes that cost up to €100,000. The village helps new owners with contractors and paperwork. Photos of the €1 houses haven’t been posted online yet, but many buyers have already repaired similar homes.

Kenya – Heroin addiction is becoming a huge problem, especially along the coast. The country, once just a stop for drug smugglers, is now a major market for heroin. The “Southern Route,” used to smuggle heroin from Afghanistan, leaves a lot of the drug in Kenya. The United Nations says there are about 27,000 heroin users in the country, with a dose costing as little as $2. About 22,000kg of heroin passes through East Africa each year, with 2,500kg, worth $160 million, staying in Kenya.

UK – Friends, family and Liam Payne’s One Direction bandmates gathered for his funeral in Buckinghamshire. Payne, who died at 31, was honoured in a private ceremony. His coffin arrived in a white horse-drawn carriage decorated with flowers spelling “son” and “daddy.” Attendees included his girlfriend Kate Cassidy, ex-partner Cheryl, their son, and Simon Cowell.

Mali – Al-Hassan Ag Abdoul Aziz has been sentenced to 10 years in prison by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Aziz was the head of Timbuktu’s Islamic police under the extremist group Ansar Dine in 2012. He was found guilty of torture, religious persecution and mistreating prisoners, but rape charges were dropped due to insufficient evidence.
