UK – British actor Idris Elba says he plans to move to Africa in the next ten years. Elba, who has family ties to Ghana and Sierra Leone, wants to help grow the continent’s film industry by building film studios in Zanzibar and Accra to support African stories. He believes Africans should be in charge of their own films and wants to share Africa’s many cultures with the world. Elba plans to live in different African cities like Accra, Freetown and Zanzibar as part of his dream for a united Africa.
Los Angeles – Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón is deciding if Erik and Lyle Menendez, convicted of killing their parents in 1989, should have their sentences reviewed. Gascón thinks the brothers no longer pose a danger and agrees with their claims that their father abused them. Some of his staff disagree with the abuse claims and believe the brothers should stay in prison. Others believe they have changed and support their release. Family members have also backed the brothers’ claims of abuse. After Gascón has reviewed the input from his teams, a judge will make the final decision.
US – Former Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Mike Jeffries, his partner Matt Smith, and a third man, Jim Jacobson, have been charged with running a sex trafficking ring. The three are accused of having recruited young men for sex parties between 2008 and 2015, often by lying and promising modelling jobs. Victims were pressured to join, fearing it would hurt their careers if they refused. Jeffries has been released on a $10-million bail, while authorities search for more victims.
Cuba – Hurricane Oscar hit eastern Cuba on Sunday, making the country’s power crisis worse and leaving millions without electricity. The storm, with winds up to 80 mph, struck near Baracoa before weakening. Heavy rain is expected in Cuba and parts of the Bahamas. In Havana, where power had been restored to 88% of homes, electricity went out again. This is the fourth power outage since Friday, causing people to protest in the streets by banging pots and pans. Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel warned against these protests, calling for calm.
