Ghana – Over a hundred shops were destroyed after a large fire broke out on Thursday at Ghana’s Kantamanto Market in Accra, causing significant property damage. Emergency services responded with 13 fire crews who managed to bring the fire under control. While no injuries have been reported, investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the blaze.
US – This week, celebrities were spotted in various locations: Post Malone performed in San Diego, Ice Spice celebrated her 25th birthday in Australia with a “princess” necklace and pink dress, Chloë Grace Moretz and rumored fiancée Kate Harrison took a walk in New York City, and Bethenny Frankel enjoyed a beach day in Miami, making for some of the week’s standout celebrity moments.
Kenya – Kenyan President William Ruto has promised to stop the abductions of government critics, marking a shift from his previous stance, where he dismissed reports of such disappearances as “fake news.” While at least 82 government critics allegedly went missing after protests in June over a controversial finance bill, Ruto’s comments did not admit any government involvement in the disappearances. Instead, he urged parents to better “take care” of their children, and called for youth to exhibit discipline and politeness. Despite acknowledging the reports of abductions, Ruto’s remarks emphasized the need for peaceful coexistence without addressing the allegations of government culpability.
South Korea – South Korean police called off an attempt to arrest suspended President Yoon Suk Yeol after a six-hour standoff with his security team. Yoon, under investigation for abuse of power and inciting insurrection related to his attempted martial law declaration in December, had ignored multiple summons for questioning. On Friday morning, police launched an operation outside his residence in central Seoul, but were blocked by Yoon’s security and military personnel, leading to a confrontation. Despite a large force being mobilized, the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) determined that the arrest was impossible due to the resistance from security forces.
