Rwanda – One person died, and many were injured at an election rally for Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame. The incident happened on Sunday in Rubavu district during the campaign for the July general election. The local government said 37 people were hurt, with four in the hospital. Kagame is running for a fourth term despite criticism of his treatment of the opposition. Kagame will compete against Frank Habineza and Philippe Mpayimana in the July 15 election.
Sudan – Unicef head Catherine Russell has said Sudan is one of the worst places in the world for children, with many suffering from malnutrition and missing school. She is visiting Sudan, which has been devastated by a brutal civil war for over a year. The food supply in Sudan has collapsed, and the Sudanese army and the rebel paramilitary Rapid Support Forces are blocking aid delivery.
Rome – Famous Malian singer Rokia Traoré was arrested as she arrived at Rome’s airport over a conviction in Belgium arising from a child custody dispute. Traoré was scheduled to perform at a concert in Italy. In 2020, she was arrested in France on a Belgian warrant for not handing over her child to the father. After being conditionally released, she defied a travel ban and flew to Mali. In October, she was sentenced in absentia in Belgium to two years for parental abduction. Traoré’s daughter has lived in Mali since age four without contact with her father. The Malian government supported her. Traoré is a celebrated singer and a UN goodwill ambassador.
Israel – Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the “intense phase” of fighting Hamas in Gaza is nearly over, allowing Israeli forces to focus on Hezbollah at the northern border. In his first media interview since the war began in October, Netanyahu said the ground operation in Rafah would soon end. However, the war would continue until Hamas is completely ousted. He addressed the rising conflict with Hezbollah, which has been attacking northern Israel in support of Hamas. Netanyahu expressed readiness for a “partial deal” to free 116 remaining hostages but stressed the ongoing goal of destroying Hamas.
