New York – Donald Trump became the first American president to be found guilty of a crime. The political consequences remain unclear as Trump appeals the hush-money case and awaits sentencing on 11 July. Despite his close presidential race with President Joe Biden, some polls show Trump’s conviction might influence voter support, especially in key states. Ariel Hill-Davis of Republican Women for Progress believes the conviction will hurt Trump’s appeal among younger, educated suburban voters. Leading Republicans, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, have defended him.
India – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to meditate at the Vivekananda Rock Memorial from 30 May to 1 June, after weeks of election campaigning. This site is where Swami Vivekananda, an Indian Hindu monk from the 19th century, reached enlightenment. In a recent interview, Modi said that he believes he was sent by God for a purpose. The final day of voting in India’s election is Saturday, with results expected three days later.
London – Catherine, Princess of Wales, will not attend the Colonel’s Review in early June as she continues cancer treatment. This military parade is the dress rehearsal for Trooping the Colour on 15 June, King Charles’ official birthday parade. It’s unclear if she will miss the ceremony, where she was expected to oversee proceedings as Colonel of the Irish Guards. Lieutenant General James Bucknall will take her place. Catherine has not taken part in public duties since December and began chemotherapy in March. King Charles, also undergoing cancer treatment, will attend the ceremony, inspecting troops from a carriage alongside Queen Camilla.
Singapore – US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and China’s Minister of National Defense Admiral Dong Jun are holding their first in-person meeting since 2022, amid growing tensions in the Asia-Pacific region. Key issues include China’s intimidation of Taiwan, aggressive territorial claims, and confrontations with Philippine vessels. The US wants to strengthen alliances with Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines, while China opposes US military influence in the region. The US also plans to address China’s support for Russia in the Ukraine conflict.
