World news bites: Cholera outbreak kills hundreds in Sudan

Rorisang Modiba brings you daily global updates.

Sudan – A deadly cholera outbreak in Sudan has thus far claimed 699 lives, with over 24,600 cases reported in 11 of the country’s 18 states. The waterborne disease was declared on 12 August 2024. The country’s health system is in bad shape after 18 months of fighting, with hospitals running out of medicines and equipment. The worst-hit areas are Al-Jazeera, Sennar, and White Nile. Makeshift treatment centres are full and struggling to assist all patients.

Turkey – Turkish airstrikes in Kurdish-held northeast Syria have left over a million people without electricity or running water following attacks on power stations and the Alouk water station. In Hassakeh province, people are relying on water tankers, but there isn’t enough for everyone. Desperate residents are fighting over supplies. Kurdish officials accuse Turkey of trying to destroy their people, while Turkey claims it is only targeting Kurdish fighters.

USA – Kim Kardashian shared a fun moment with a Tesla Optimus robot, which costs between $20,000 and $30,000, in a video on social media. She showed the robot how to wave, make heart shapes with its hands, and blow kisses. The robot mimicked her actions, even performing a hula dance to surprise her.

New Zealand – Tens of thousands of people marched on New Zealand’s parliament in Wellington to protest a law that some say takes away Māori rights. The peaceful Māori-led protest, called a hīkoi, lasted nine days and covered much of the North Island. About 42,000 people, many dressed in traditional Māori clothing, took part in one of the country’s biggest protests in decades. Even though the law is unlikely to pass, it has sparked heated debates about Indigenous rights under New Zealand’s new right-wing government.
