Florida – A mother in Florida, USA, is taking Character.ai to court, claiming their chatbot encouraged her depressed 14-year-old son to take his own life. Megan Garcia’s lawsuit also names Google, accusing the company of negligence. Character.ai denies the allegations but expresses sympathy for the family.
Africa – Scientists say climate change has worsened rainfall in parts of Africa. The World Weather Attribution group found that rains are now 5-20% heavier in the Niger and Lake Chad regions. These floods have killed over 2,000 people and forced millions to flee their homes in Chad, Cameroon, Niger, Nigeria, and Sudan over the past few years. Experts are calling for improved water management and climate action ahead of the COP29 summit.
America – Rapper Cardi B has been hospitalised and had to cancel her performance at One MusicFest. She informed fans on Instagram that she was disappointed to miss the event but promised to return stronger. This comes as she deals with her divorce from Offset and false reports to child services regarding her new baby. Cardi B also denied rumours of undergoing plastic surgery after her pregnancy.
Hong Kong – Dinosaur fossils have been discovered on Hong Kong’s Port Island. The bones are believed to be from the Cretaceous period. The Agriculture Department made the find earlier this year, and scientists are still working to identify the species. The site has been closed for further excavation, and the fossils will be displayed at the Heritage Discovery Centre. Until now, only dinosaur eggs had been found in Hong Kong.
