Africa – Africa is seeing a rise in polio cases, with 134 new infections reported in countries like Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, and Nigeria, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). So far in 2024, polio has impacted 541 children worldwide, with 85% of cases occurring in countries with wars. UNICEF warns that vaccination rates have fallen to 70%, below the 95% needed to achieve ‘herd immunity’. Polio is re-emerging in conflict zones, including Gaza and Sudan, where vaccination drives have reached 600,000 children in Gaza and 2.9 million in Sudan.
Nevada – Former US president Donald Trump attracted a large crowd in Nevada, the gambling state, focusing on economic issues. Joining him were Florida Senator Marco Rubio, business leader Vivek Ramaswamy, and Turning Point founder Charlie Kirk. Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris attracted 23,000 supporters at a rally in Georgia, where stars like Bruce Springsteen, Barack Obama, and Spike Lee joined her.
Los Angeles – The Menendez brothers, jailed since 1996 for killing their parents, might get parole after 34 years. Los Angeles prosecutors want to reduce their sentence due to new evidence about abuse.
UK – Britain’s government and King Charles III will discuss paying for slavery at a Commonwealth meeting in Samoa. Britain enslaved 3.1 million Africans from 1640 to 1807. Estimates indicate that Britain might owe as much as $24 trillion in compensation.
