In 2003 Rudie van Vuuren played for Namibia in both the Cricket and Rugby World Cups, becoming the only individual to ever participate in both tournaments in the same year.
During the Cricket World Cup, Van Vuuren made a brave stand for Namibia. Trailing at 42-9 and at risk of setting the lowest total in a World Cup, Van Vuuren contributed a solid 14 off 19 balls, saving the team from the unwanted record.
Van Vuuren recalls joking with Pakistani captain, Waqar Younis, suggesting the fast bowlers weren’t up to the mark. Just moments later, Shoaib Akhtar unleashed a near record-breaking delivery, clocking at 158.5 km/h.
Facing cricketing giants, such as England and Australia, in Namibia’s debut World Cup was no small feat for an amateur team. Despite the losses, Van Vuuren remained proud, even recounting hitting famed bowler James Anderson for a six.
Before Namibia’s Rugby World Cup opener, Van Vuuren suffered a significant calf injury. It looked as if he would be out for the series. However he made a triumphant return in the closing minutes of the last group match, realising his dream of representing his country in world cups in different sports in the same year.
Adding another layer to his remarkable life story, Van Vuuren is not just a sporting icon but also a qualified physician, balancing his medical practice with his sporting commitments.
Off the field, Van Vuuren has mingled with Hollywood elites like Angelina Jolie and has played an essential role in the health of Namibia’s President Hage Geingob.
His passion project, an animal sanctuary near Windhoek, received support from Jolie and Brad Pitt in 2011. Currently serving as the president of Cricket Namibia, Van Vuuren aims to advance the nation’s cricketing status.
