- Union warns staff to stay away from work after one worker was allegedly attacked by “hired thugs.”
Police had to step in to stop a fight between workers and councillors at the Ditsobotla municipal offices in Lichtenburg, North West, on Tuesday.
The clash was so bad that the workers’ union told its members to stay away from work.
Lebogang Sehularo from the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) sent out an urgent warning to workers.
“We want to inform you that your safety is currently at risk. Today, one of our employees was attacked by hired thugs at the municipal buildings, allegedly with the involvement of councillors,” the message read.
Sehularo said the acting electricity manager, who belongs to Samwu, and other managers haven’t dealt with the problem.
“Given the volatile situation, we advise all members to avoid the workplace until we receive a guarantee of safety,” the message continued.
“We will keep you updated on further developments. Please understand that entering the municipality is at your own risk. It is important to stay away for your own protection.”
“Police in Lichtenburg are aware of disruptive action that was reported at the Ditsobotla Local Municipality during a meeting that was held yesterday, 21 January 2025.
“Members of Public Order Police (POP) were mobilized and immediately intervened. Thereafter, the meeting continued uninterrupted,” Col Adรฉle Myburgh said.
