Women suffer brunt of Covid job losses

When it comes to losing jobs, the Covid-19 storm in SA has hurt women much more than men.

A new study estimates that three million jobs were lost during February and April.

Of these, two million had been held by women – even though women made up less than half of the work force.

The study said almost half (47%) of those surveyed said their household ran out of money to buy food in April 2020.

The National Income Dynamics Study: Coronavirus Rapid Mobile Survey was based on research among 7,000 households.
