  • Nandipha Qelesile, 38, sells Focal Logic herbal supplements for R450 per bottle and makes over R7,000 monthly to support her family.
  • She gave up branded clothes, weaves, movie nights, eating out, and DSTV, and now does a brush cut to save money.

A 38-year-old woman from Gqeberha has given up the comfortable life she was living to take care of her five siblings and her mother.

Nandipha Qelesile lost her job at a laundry during Covid-19.

“I have been looking for a job for all these years without luck. Then last year, my friend introduced me to the Focal Logic herbal blend supplement that she was selling. During that time, I had a lot of stress, and I decided to give it a try so I could take care of my family,” said Qelesile.

She started selling the product, charging R450 per bottle, and since then, she has been taking care of her family.

The number of bottles she sells depends on demand, but she makes more than R7,000 monthly because she sells at malls, taxi ranks, schools, clinics, and on social media.

“Sometimes I get paid when people join under my name and they also sell and have other people join under them. With the money I am making, I can send R2,000 to my family to buy groceries, R500 for my rent in Cape Town, and R1,500 for my own groceries,” said Qelesile.

She also sends them R600 for electricity and gas.

“They don’t use electricity to cook. They use a gas stove. I buy R300 electricity for myself,” said Qelesile.

Her family buys combos at Boxer supermarket, while she buys hers at Shoprite and her vegetable combo at Pick n Pay.

“There are a lot of things I have stopped buying and doing. I loved going out to movie nights, but I had to cut that off because I don’t have money anymore,” said Qelesile.

She buys chicken for R300, three tins of pilchards, and Koo beans so the meat lasts her for a month.

“I don’t eat meat every day,” she said.

She used to wear branded clothes, change wigs, and eat out.

“I am now a girl who always does a brush cut on my head. I have cut weaves out. I also canceled my DSTV subscription and I stopped drinking,” said Qelesile.

She used to buy oats and cornflakes.

“I only buy instant porridge because you can eat it without meat. Even though it tastes good with milk, I can’t afford to buy milk,” said Qelesile.

She only goes home in December and buys Shoprite vouchers so she can afford groceries during Christmas.

“I buy vouchers that cost R4,000 so I can buy groceries for my family in December. It is the only time I can see them,” said Qelesile.
