Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was named the 2023/24 PSL Footballer of the Season on Sunday evening.
He becomes the third goalkeeper to claim this award in the PSL era. Andre Arendse was honoured in the 2001/02 season and Itumeleng Khune in the 2012/13 season.
In being crowned the league’s best footballer, Williams beat his teammate Teboho Mokoena, a runner-up, alongside Stellenbosch’s Iqraam Rayners.
This is the fifth season in a row that a Sundowns player has won this top award.
Williams was also selected as the PSL Goalkeeper of the Season after keeping 15 clean sheets in 22 league games.
Sundowns and Orlando Pirates stars dominated the evening. Buccaneers linkman Patrick Maswanganyi was named the PSL Players’ Player of the Season.
It remains a surprise that Maswanganyi, despite being named Man of the Match an impressive seven times during the season, was not a Footballer of the Season nominee.
However, he found joy in being named the Midfielder of the Season and the Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament.
The award for Coach of the Season went to Masandawana tactician Rhulani Mokwena, while Tshegofatso Mabasa claimed Golden Boot after scoring 16 goals.
Pirates star Thabiso Lebitso’s thunderous strike during the Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs was picked as the Goal of the Season.
The judging panel might have found it easy to select the Young Player of the Season, with Relebohile Mofokeng standing out among his peers.
Masandawana and Bafana Bafana centre-back Grant Kekana came out tops in the Defender of the Season category.
The Carling Knockout Player of the Tournament went to Stellenbosch midfielder Devin Titus.
