Who the hell stole an empty coffin?

One would have been forgiven for thinking that the police carrying a casket in Folweni, south of Durban, were attending a funeral.

With three on each side, the officers carried the empty coffin from the river where it was recovered.

“They carried it as if it had a body inside,” said local resident Thami Mzolo.

“I’m still confused. Who would steal a coffin of all things?” he added.

Police were tipped off by locals that the casket had been dumped near the Ezimbokodweni river.

It is believed that the coffin might have been looted from one of the many funeral parlours in Isipingo, a small town near Folweni.

Musa Mkhize told Scrolla.Africa that he was stunned when he saw the coffin near the river.

“The community was shocked to see the coffin. What scared us the most was that we didn’t know whether there was a body  inside it or not.”

Mkhize said he associated a coffin with bad luck.

“Whoever stole the coffin has invited bad luck to his life,” he said.

But local traditional healer Muziwenkosi Sibiya differed.

“There is no bad luck associated with coffins as long as they have not been used by anyone.”

Police said no arrest was made, while no one has claimed ownership of the casket.

This was the second coffin that had been recovered in KZN after the riots three weeks ago.
