A group of fans was caught on video making racist chants about Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr before Atletico Madrid’s Champions League game against Inter Milan on Wednesday.

The Brazilian has faced similar abuse in the past, during a trip to Morocco and in a previous Madrid derby in 2021, when he called for authorities to take action against the racism he had suffered.

The video, circulating on social media, shows Atletico supporters outside their stadium, mocking Vinicius Jr. by calling him a “chimpanzee”.

This incident could lead to legal consequences for Atletico Madrid.

Spanish prosecutors previously investigated similar chants but did not classify them as a crime due to the rivalry between the two sides, however, they did admit the chants were offensive and disrespectful.

Atletico’s player Morata has voiced strong opinions against racism in football, calling for lifetime bans for those engaging in racist behaviour at matches.
