Vanessa Mudau crowned new Miss Alexandra 2025

  • Organisers say Miss Alexandra offers young people a positive alternative at a time when many are pulled into crime and substance abuse.
  • Winners receive support such as education funding, media exposure and career guidance through partnerships with local organisations.

Alexandra has a new queen. On Saturday, 30 August, 20-year-old Vanessa Mudau walked away with the Miss Alexandra 2025 title at Eastbank Hall.

She takes over from Thando Motha, who held the crown last year.

The day-long event drew a big crowd of supporters from the township, cheering on the contestants.

But Miss Alexandra is not just about looks and glamour. The contest is used as a way to give young people in the area skills and direction.

One of the organisers, Nomsa Motha, said: “Many of our youth are being drawn into negative behaviours, often because of a lack of opportunities, mentorship and support. Through this initiative, we are offering them a different path.”

Through partnerships with Boston Business College, Alex FM and SBK Gym, winners can access study funding, media platforms, career guidance, fitness training and other opportunities.

Motha admitted that organising the pageant is tough. “From sound equipment to catering, workshops and prizes, it all requires funding. Honestly, it’s only by the grace of God that we manage,” she said.

The directors, Motha, Tshepo Mosima and Mahlatse Mabaso, say their aim is to use the pageant to keep young people inspired and focused.

They also hope Miss Alexandra can grow into a contest that carries the same weight as Miss Soweto and Miss South Africa. Not for the glamour, they say, but so that it attracts more backing to change lives in the township.
