- A man in his early twenties has been arrested for stabbing his girlfriend to death and then trying to kill himself.
- The deadly attack took place inside a university-funded residence just outside the main campus in Limpopo.
A University of Venda student has been killed in her student residence, allegedly by her boyfriend who is also a student at the same university.
The man, who is in his early twenties, allegedly stabbed his girlfriend during a fight in their shared student room on Friday night. The room is part of a university-funded residence, less than one kilometre from the main campus.
It is believed the man accused her of cheating before taking out a knife and stabbing her. He then tried to take his own life by jumping out of the window from the third floor of the building. He survived and has been arrested.
Tshilidzi Tshovhota, a fellow student, said she was shocked by the news. “It is difficult to understand why he ended the life of a young woman who had so much potential. Her family would have been so proud of her one day,” she said.
Tshovhota said she saw the couple just a day before the killing and had no idea they were having problems. “They looked fine and happy. If they were having issues, they should have just gone their separate ways. They were too young to die for love.”
Another student, Emanuel Gezani, said the murder was heartbreaking. “Just think how many people are in pain now, because of the cruelty of one man. Her family sent her here to study, not to be killed.”
Gezani said he hopes the man stays in jail for life. “Police must lock him up and throw away the keys. He does not deserve to live among us.”
The University of Venda said it will issue a statement soon. Limpopo police told Scrolla.Africa they were checking with the local police station but had not responded by the time of publishing.
This killing comes during Women’s Month, when Scrolla.Africa has reported several cases of women being murdered in Vhembe, Limpopo.
On 12 August, we reported that a 33-year-old man killed his girlfriend and raped her teenage daughter.
On 5 August, a man hacked his lover to death and then hanged himself.
