In what has been the worst start of his career as Kaizer Chiefs coach, Gavin Hunt can still be adored by everyone involved in the club settings. On Saturday night Hunt guided Amakhosi to their famous win in the CAF Champions League when they beat Wydad Casablanca 1-0.
Bernard Parker’s 48th minute header gave Hunt an opportunity to become the most successful Chiefs coach in this competition. Already he has written his name in the club’s history books by qualifying for the group stages – something that Amakhosi has never done before.
What made the win over Moroccan giants even sweeter for Hunt is that he did it with nine players left on the field. Keeper Daniel Akpeyi was given a straight red card just one minute before the interval.
Star striker Samir Nurkovic followed suit receiving his marching orders a minute before the final whistle. This means Hunt will be without these two in Chiefs’ crucial final match next Saturday.
Chiefs face Horoya FC in a do or die clash on Saturday. Both Chiefs and Horoya have eight points but they are separated by goal difference.
Should Chiefs win in Guinea on Saturday they will qualify for the competition’s quarter-finals. This would make Hunt become the special one for Amakhosi’s faithfuls.
It’s going to be a big test for Hunt and his lads considering that they failed to win in Soweto in the first leg. That match ended in a goalless draw but that was before Amakhosi found their tune in this competition.
On Saturday Horoya also won their fifth match after beating bottom side Petro de Luanda by 1-0.
Meanwhile on Friday night Mamelodi Sundowns failed for the first time to collect maximum points in this season’s campaign. Downs, who are already through to the quarter-finals, were held away to a goalless stalemate by Al-Hilal of Sudan.
Sundowns lead Group B with 13 points after five matches. Next Friday they host CR Belouizdad of Algeria in the final match of the group.
